Using ACT UP's media strategies as inspiration, design a transmedia campaign aimed at informing and motivating audiences concerning some aspect of the AIDS epidemic as it is playing out right now.
Experience the challenge of designing a story for digital and transmedia telling. For this project, you will need two collaborators. Each collaborator in the trio completes an orginal script (step #1 below). Each then passes off her/his script to collaborator #2 and takes up the script of collaborator #3. This handing-off of the project repeats through the steps below.
1. Profile a person "on the edge" who is facing a crisis: a huge emotional decision that requires interaction with one or two others (quit a job, end a romance, paint a room).
- Describe the protagonist and dilemma.
- Describe one local scene where action takes place.
- Write a script for a 2 to 3 minute piece using:
(a) first person voice over narration,
(b) dialogue between characters,
(c) combo of above can be, at most, 2/3 of screen time (leaving space for pure action).
- Use classic dramatic structure:
(a) establish scene & characters,
(b) depict an inciting incident,
(c) build to action (development),
(d) depict crisis / moment of action (epiphany),
(e) script out resolution (dénouement).
2. Originating writers also record voice track and edit to rough length.
3. Pass your script to your first collaborator, and receive the script of your second collaborator, which you will now work on in this step. You are now the director of the script you've received. Cast and shoot a series of stills that visualize the narrative.
Edit these stills as your "director's cut" against the voice track. As director, choose elements of mis-en-scene:
(a) camera lens and angle,
(b) set dressing, lighting, wardrobe, edges etc.,
(c) a symbol system .
4. Pass your director's cut to your first collaborator and receive the director's cut from your second collaborator. You are now editor and also art director of the director's cut you've just received. You are free to rework elements of the voice track and picture track. Use Photoshop to heighten psychological dimensions of the story.
- add music.
- add head titles (simple) & end credits.
- cut to final length.
5. Pass your final cut to your first collaborator and receive the final cut of your original script from your second collaborator. Give each other notes about the choices you made and what you think of the results.
Pangea Day taps the power of film to strengthen tolerance and compassion while uniting millions of people to build a better future.
In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.
On May 10, 2008 – Pangea Day – sites in Cairo, Dharamsala, Kigali, London, New York City, Ramallah, Rio de Janeiro, and Tel Aviv will be videoconferenced live to produce a 4-hour program of powerful films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music.
The program will be broadcast live to the world through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.
Of course, movies alone can’t change the world. But the people who watch them can. So following May 10, 2008, Pangea Day organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with numerous organizations which are already doing groundbreaking work.
Pangea's Call: Get Involved
Do you want to share your story with the world? Please submit your film.
From the dawn of time, humans have gathered around the village campfire to share their stories, a primal experience building community and creating strong emotion.
The world has shrunk, and today our village is global. But we haven't yet figured out how to listen to each other. Think of Pangea Day as a modern-day campfire. It will be a moment when we stop, gather together, and listen to each others' stories – using the most powerful story-telling technology our species has ever known: film.
We're looking for films that will make us laugh, cry, and gasp. They can be fiction, non-fiction, real-life, animation, or your own unique mixture. But they should hold our attention for every second. And above all, they should tell a story that someone else on the other side of the world will be able to relate to.
As you plan your film, try to imagine millions of people in different countries gathered around in the flickering light, waiting in hushed silence for your tale to start. What story will you tell? What images will you show them?
